How to help with homework without doing it for them.

Telling them the answer feels like the fast way through. The memory science says it skips the one step that actually makes it stick.

Most parents have had this moment: your child is stuck on a maths problem, it's 7pm, everyone's tired, and the fastest way through is just to tell them the answer. It works — the homework gets done. But there's a real cost to that shortcut, and it's worth understanding before you reach for it again tomorrow.

Why "just tell them" backfires

Cognitive scientists call it the testing effect: the act of retrieving an answer yourself, even when you get it wrong first, builds a stronger memory than being told the answer and reading it again. A widely cited meta-analysis pooling results across hundreds of studies found practice-testing outperformed simply re-reading or being told the material, with the effect holding across ages and subjects (Adesope, Trevisan & Sundararajan, 2017, accessed 2026-09-20). Handing over the answer skips the one step that actually makes it stick.

There's a second cost too: a child who's used to being told the answer stops trying to find it themselves. Not because they're lazy — because it's a perfectly rational response to how the homework session usually goes.

What actually helps

None of this means leaving your child to struggle alone. The research points to a different kind of help — one that guides without giving the answer away:

  • Ask what they've tried, not what the answer should be. "Where did you get stuck?" opens the door to a real conversation. "The answer's 42" closes it.
  • Let them explain it back to you, even a wrong attempt. Researchers call this self-explanation, and a 2018 meta-analysis found it has one of the more reliable effects in the learning-strategies literature — but only when it's genuinely prompted, not just left as an optional extra (Bisra, Liu, Nesbit, Salimi & Winne, 2018, accessed 2026-09-20).
  • Offer the smallest hint that unsticks them, not the full method. "What's the first step?" before "here's how you solve it."
  • Let a wrong answer be okay. A mistake caught and worked through is more useful than a right answer arrived at by copying.
  • Know when to stop for the night. If you're both frustrated, the lesson to teach isn't about maths — it's that stopping and coming back tomorrow is a completely normal, sensible choice. Nobody learns well exhausted.

A simple script to try tonight: "Show me what you've got so far." Then: "What do you think the next step might be?" If they're genuinely stuck after that, give one small nudge — not the answer, just enough to get them moving again.
